+ if you want to make a little ‘top knot’ on your hat, when you have three stitches remaining on your needles make an icord approximately an inch long.

To make an icord, knit a row as normal. Do not turn the work. Instead, slip your work to the other end of the needle. The working yarn should now be at the ‘wrong’ end.
Pull the working yarn tightly across the back of the work and knit the row. Slip your work to the end of the needle, pull the yarn tightly and knit the row again. Continue until your icord is as long as you want it to be.

Break the yarn and draw the tail of the yarn through the remaining stitches tightly.

*K1, P2* rib for approximately 1 inch
Knit straight for approximately 6 inches, or until hat is of the desired height.
Cast off (I personally tend to turn the hat inside out and use a three needle bind off but you can cast off in your favourite way).

To make the little tassels on the corners of the hat:
Make 9 pieces of yarn of around six inches long (to do this, I wrap yarn around my hand loosely and then trim to size).
Tie the pieces together in the middle as tightly as you can.
Sew the tassels onto the hat through the knot. This ensures that the tassels cannot be pulled off the hat by the baby.

If you want to embellish the hat further, you can sew on felt eyes and a beak to make an owl hat.
