Free Knitting Pattern: Dashing Socks

dashing-socks2

This toe-up sock knitting pattern has an easy four-round repeat making it perfect if you want a mindless pattern that isn’t quite as mindless as stocking stitch. It is easy to adapt the pattern for fit as long as your stitch count is divisible by four. The pattern produces a pretty dashed effect on the sock.

The pattern below is for a stitch count of 52 and I use a Fleegle heel. However any stitch count in multiples of 4 can be used, and any heel, so these socks can easily be adjusted for fit.

MATERIALS

Fingering weight yarn
2 circular needles. I recommend either 2.5mm or 2.25mm
1 stitch marke

PATTERN

Dashing socks

Toe

Cast on 24 stitches

Round 1
Needle 1: k1, m1, knit to 2 stitches before end, m1, k1
Needle 2: k1, m1, knit to 2 stitches before end, m1, k1

Round 2: Knit all stitches on both needles.

Repeat both rounds until you have 26 stitch

es on each needle (52 in total)

Foot
Note: The Bottom/Sole of the foot is worked on needle 2 and is stocking stitch (knit every round) until the heel increases.

Round 1:
Needle 1: *Slip 1 (as if to purl), p1*
Needle 2: Knit all stitches

Rounds 2, 3 and 4
Knit all stitches on both needles.

Continue in this manner until the foot of the sock is 2.5 inches less than the total desired length.

Heel
Round 1:
Needle 1: k
Needle 2 (gusset needle): k2, m1, knit to second-to-last stitch, m1, k2.

Round 2:
Knit all stitches on both needles

Repeat these two rounds until the heel/gusset needle contains 50 stitches (Or two less than your total number of stitches).

Place a stitch marker at the centre point of the needle holding your heel. There should be 25 stitches either side.

Knit to 2 stitches beyond the marker. K2tog, K1, turn.
Slip 1 purlwise. Purl to 2 stitches beyond the marker, P2tog, P1, turn.

*Slip 1, knit to the gap, knit the stitch before and after the gap to close it, K1. Turn
Slip 1, purl to the gap, purl the stitch before and after the gap to close it, P1. Turn*
Repeat these two rows until all stitches are done.

Resume knitting on both needles and decrease the excess stitches to bring the total back to 52 stitches. At this point, you can either continue with the pattern on the top needle only, or you can knit the pattern on both needles if you prefer.

Continue knitting until you are around 2 inches away from your sock’s desired length
