Make your own baby footprint & handprint keepsake

Make your own baby handprint footprint keepsakeIt is really easy to make your own baby footprint and handprint keepsake. The beauty of making your own is that you can personalise it in any way you want – make the dough different colours, different shapes or do different hand/foot combinations. You also don’t have to be arty to make this keepsake and if you mess it up, it’s easy to redo! You can also make it using ordinary kitchen cupboard essentials so there’s no need to spend money on fancy products.

To make the salt dough, you will need:

  • Salt
  • Water
  • Flour

Free Easy Sewing Project: Make Your Own Baby Soft Book

Baby Soft BookThis baby soft book is a really easy sewing project. If you have a sewing machine, it will speed up the process however the soft book can easily be completely hand-sewn.

Materials Required:

  • Coloured fabric (for the cover)
  • Plain fabric (for the pages)
  • Coloured felt and/or fabric (for the pictures)
  • Various coloured threads
  • Toy stuffing (optional)
To make the soft book:

First, decide what pictures you want to use. You want to think about using simple images which are bold and bright, possibly with areas that you can embroider for extra interest in terms ofboth colour and touch. I used six images:

Free Knitting Pattern: Easy Stashbusting Snake Toy

Stash busting knitted snakeThis snake toy is perfect for using up all the scraps of yarn you might have lying around. This snake toy is knitted in the round and uses basic increases and decreases. It is a great project if you want to start knitting in the round on circular needles but don’t want to knit socks. If you get stuck Silver’s Sock Class has fantastic pictures and instructions which uses the same techniques I’ve used for the pattern below.

MATERIALS

  • 2 x Circular needles (use needles appropriate to your yarn – I used 2.5mm)
  • Toy stuffing

Free Knitting Pattern: Small Halloween Ghost Toy

knitted-halloween-ghost-toy

This is a really simple knitted toy to make and because it’s so small (the final ghost stands at around 7cm high), it is really quick to make.

Materials:

  • White DK wool (acrylic is probably best)
  • Some scrap DK wool (for the eyes and mouth)
  • Grey DK wool (optional – depends on what colour you want the chains to be)
  • A darning needle (for sewing up)
  • A small amount of stuffing (if you don’t want to buy toy stuffing, you can use scraps of wool or material – but make sure it is a light colour so it doesn’t show through)

Free Knitting Pattern: Easy Baby Cow Hat

This is a simple baby hat which requires you to be able to knit, purl, K2tog (knit two together) and be able to knit in two colours. If you haven’t knitted in multiple colours before, this is an easy project to start you off! Just remember to twist the two colours around each other when you change colours otherwise you will end up with holes. All the pieces are knitted flat and then sewn together afterwards.

MATERIALS

  • Size 6 (4mm) needles
  • Black wool
  • White wool
  • Brown wool
  • Some stuffing
  • A blunt needle

Free Knitting Pattern: Easy Patterned Handwarmers

Free Knitting Pattern: Easy HandwarmersThese patterned handwarmers are a really simple, quick knit and are perfect as last-minute gifts. The picture on the side used a merino wool/acrylic mix to ensure the handwarmers are warm yet hard-wearing however any DK weight yarn will do.

Dec 2012 – Based on Ravelry feedback: If your hands are fairly large, you may want to cast on a few more stitches (in multiples of 4) to ensure a good fit. If you prefer a tighter cuff, knit the cuff on a smaller size of needles before swapping back to 4mm needles for the handwarmer body.

Knitted Cat Blanket Squares

I made a conscious decision this week to attempt to finish some of my WIPs. The square for my first cat blanket have been knitted up and sewn togther:

Cat blanket - knitted squares

This was a lovely easy knit. The cat squares are actually a dishcloth pattern however they seem to be a lot larger than the standard sort of dishcloth size. All of the wool used is Sirdar acrylic – hopefully it will be quite hard wearing and easy to look after.
